Identification of discrepancies in geophysical measurements: Aurora Limited experience and practical recommendations

Aurora Limited conducted a control measurement with a gyroscopic inclinometer on one of the Customer's projects, where a significant discrepancy was found in the values of the angle and azimuth of the well provided and drilled by another contractor.

To identify discrepancies in angle and azimuth, together with the Customer, it was decided to conduct a commission measurement. This included repeated control measurement using three inclinometers in conjunction with the Contractor's equipment.

When analyzing the causes of the discrepancy in angles and azimuths, several possible factors were identified. These include technical errors, lack of calibration of equipment, non-compliance with standards and protocols during measurements, as well as ultra-high drilling performance.

Inaccurate data could lead to an incorrect interpretation of the structure of the underground layers, which increases the risk of errors during the operation of the field. Having discovered a discrepancy in the angle and azimuth, Aurora Limited operators notified the management and the Customer about violations of drilling technology and offered control over the measurement processes. This case highlights the importance of continuous monitoring and ensuring accuracy during geological work.

Recommendations of Aurora Limited: the need for regular calibration of equipment, the involvement of highly qualified specialists and strict control over the process of data collection and transmission.

During prospecting and, especially, exploratory drilling, it is important to observe the design parameters in order to ensure the intersection of the ore body at a given point and at a given angle. It is important to note that the curvature of the well is one of the parameters by which the Customer accepts the well or decides to classify it as defective. In some cases, this may lead to a conflict of interest.

Therefore, we recommend inviting companies with a good reputation to perform the above-mentioned works, or dividing drilling, geophysical research and geological support between different contractors. We are always and at any stage of work open to audit at any level and often give recommendations on conducting our own audits.

Aurora Limited expresses its gratitude to its employees for their honesty, transparency and responsibility, once again proving that these principles are at the heart of our company.
