Overview of Kazakhstan mining and mineral exploration sector

He graduated from the Saratov Socio-Economic University (Russia) and Cranfield School of Management (UK). He began his career in banking in 2003. 

In 2006-2008, Kanat Sharlapaev worked in the Finance Department of the regional office, Project Management Department, Operations and Technologyl Department, and Sales Department of the Citi Investment Bank (UK, Czech Republic). 

In 2008-2014, he served as Senior Analyst, Assistant Vice-President, and Vice-President of the Regional Department of the Equity Market Activities of the Citi Investment Bank (London, UK). 

In 2014-2015, he held the position of Vice President of the Regional Strategic Planning and Analysis Group for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa of the Citi Investment Bank (London, UK). 

In 2015-2017, Kanat Sharlapaev served as Chief Financial Officer, Deputy Chairman of the Board, and Senior Vice President of Citibank Kazakhstan. 

In 2017-2020, he held the positions of Chief Financial Officer for Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan and Senior Vice President of Citibank Russia. 

In 2020 – 2022 - Regional Director for Strategy, Planning and analysis in the emerging markets of Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe of the investment bank "City" (UAE). 

In Feb 2022 - September 2023 Chairman of the Board of the “Baiterek” National Managing Holding Since September 2023 - Minister of Industry and Construction of the Republic Kazakhstan

Dauletbek Kussainov
Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Canada
Welcome speech

Dauletbek Kussainov graduated from Sh. Valikhanov Kokshetau University, Eurasian Humanities Institute and the University of Stirling. He started his career in 1998 as a lecturer at the German Language Department of Sh. Valikhanov Kokshetau University. From 1999 to 2000 he worked as a consultant at the National Center for Sustainable Development of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the Republic of Kazakhstan. 

He started his diplomatic career in 2000 as an attaché of the Multilateral Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Prior to his appointment as Kazakhstan's Ambassador to Canada, he was Head of the Foreign Policy and International Relations Department of the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Kaakhstan since October 2019. He has the diplomatic rank of Envoy Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Second Class. He speaks English, German and Dutch.

Yerlan Galiyev
National Geological Survey Chairman
Development of National Geological Survey and National mineral database

Yerlan Galiyev graduated from Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas, specializing in oil and gas geology. His professional journey in the oil and gas industry began in November 2008, when he took on the role of a well exploration operator (4th category) at JSC “Embamunaigas”, OGPD “Kaynarmunaigas” in the Atyrau region. Here, he was responsible for measuring reservoir and bottomhole pressure, temperature, and conducting well testing. In July 2022, Yerlan Galiyev was appointed Chairman of the Board at JSC “National Geological Survey” of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Astana. He has since been focusing on the development and management of state infrastructure for collecting, storing, and providing open access to geological information and attracting investments in subsoil use. 

In 2021, Galiyev was selected as a member of the Presidential Youth Personnel Reserve (PYPR 2.0), marking a significant recognition of his expertise and leadership potential in Kazakhstan's oil and gas sector.

Mr. Serik Shakhazhanov graduated from Pavlodar State University named after S. Toraigyrov with a degree in "Management of industries and social sphere". Serik Shakhazhanov graduated from S. Toraigyrov Pavlodar State University with a degree in "Management in industries and social sphere", Karaganda State Technical University with a degree in "Metallurgy", received a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Lomonosov Moscow State University, then a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree from the State University of the Higher School of Economics (Moscow). He received a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Lomonosov Moscow State University, followed by a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree from the State University of the Higher School of Economics (Moscow). 

Under the supervision of Serik Shakhazhanov, he was responsible for the development of cost-effective and optimal long-term strategic development plans for the Group's entities, analysis and coordination of capital expenditures for production assets in Kazakhstan, procurement methodologies, formation and analysis of annual procurement programs.

Geology of the Balkhash segment of the Kazakhstan orocline: commodity basket for energy transition metals

Reimar Seltmann (PhD 1987 Bergakademie Freiberg) joined the Natural History Museum (NHM) in 1999 after postdoctoral research at ZIPE / GFZ Potsdam and Geological Survey of Canada. At NHM he is a Research Leader in Ore Deposits and since 2002 Founder & Head of CERCAMS (Centre for Russian and Central EurAsian Mineral Studies). He is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Trinity College University of Dublin and a Visiting Professor at Ocean University of China, Qingdao. 

Reimar has almost 40 years of experience in studies of ore-bearing granitic systems of Transeurasian metallogenic belts, with special interest in magmatic-hydrothermal transition processes of granite-ore systems. His mineral deposits research covers a wide range of mineral systems (Au, Cu, Sn, U, REE, Li etc.), with regional focus on geodynamic and metallogenic processes in ore districts of accretionary and collisional belts, targeting Kazakhstan and Central Asia. 

Reimar has led NHM research in several projects: Metallogeny of the Altaids, IGCP/INTAS projects, EC H2020 FAME and UKRI Li4UK. He is currently a Co-Investigator of the NERC-LIFT project, of projects on critical metal potential of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan (World Bank, BEIS and NCSTE funded), and a Think Tank member of the EC h2020 GreenPeg project.

Copper porphyry potential in the Balkhash region

Marina Bragina has almost 15 years of experience in mineral exploration and resource estimation of copper, gold, lead, zinc, tungsten and others. She is a Member of Australian Institute of Geoscientists (MAIG) and Professional Society of Independent Experts of the Subsurface Resources of Kazakhstan (MPONEN). 

Marina specializes in exploration of various deposit types (Porphyry Cu-Au and Epithermal systems, orogenic gold deposits, carbonate hosted lead-zinc deposits). She participated in the mineral resources estimation of the largest deposits in Kazakhstan actively using frame and block modeling methods, and currently working on the assessment of the Kemir deposit.

Timothy Barry

Pavlodar region, gold-copper potential

Mr. Barry is a seasoned geologist and mining executive with over 20 years experience. In addition to his role at Arras Minerals, Mr. Barry also serves as Director and CEO of Silver Bull Resources, a role he has held for over a decade. Prior to this, he worked as Chief Geologist for Dome Ventures in West and Central Africa, managing all aspects of their exploration programs and overseeing corporate compliance for Dome’s various subsidiaries. Mr. Barry has worked as a project geologist for Entree Gold, a company that has a significant stake in the Oyu Tolgoi mine in Mongolia; for Ross River Minerals Inc. on its El Pulpo copper/gold project in Sinaloa, Mexico; for Canabrava Diamonds Corporation in the James Bay lowlands in Ontario, Canada. 

He has also worked as a mapping geologist for the Geological Survey of Canada in the Coast Mountains, and as a research assistant at the University of British Columbia. Mr. Barry received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Otago in Dundein, New Zealand and is a Chartered Professional Geologist (CPAusIMM). Mr. Barry is based full time in Kazakhstan.

Marat Shaimardanov is a graduate Washington State University Bachelor of Science, Economics of Financial Markets (2006 - 2010). His work experience includes: 

  • An Executive at Ernst & Young, doing work such as: Transaction Advisory Services - Mergers & Acquisitions 
  • Has previously worked at CJSC Yuzhno Kyrgyzskiy Cement Plant as a Member of the Board Of Directors. YKC was acquired by Verny Capital in a series of several transactions at development stage, leading up to construction and commencement in 2010. At the time it was the only dryprocess cement producer in South Kyrgyzstan and North Tajikistan regions with 1 mtpa capacity. Thanks to hands-on management and fully-owned resource base, the Company withstood several Page 1 of 3 regional turmoils, growing competition from newly emerging producers. Verny Capital completed a successful sale to a global strategic in 2019. RG Gold was a Member of Executive and Technical Committees. 
  • RG Gold was invested in by Verny Capital in 2012 as promising gold deposit with existing heap leach operation and potential to capitalize on expanded resource base through exploration. Thanks to the talent of experienced management team and long-term strategic view to develop the deposit, Verny Capital attracted one of the largest mining-focused private equity firm Resource Capital Funds to invest into the construction of 5 mtpa CIP plant to be commissioned in the end of 2022 
  • Currently works as a Chief Financial Officer at RG Gold.

In 2011, he graduated from Pavlodar State University with a degree in finance. In March 2017, he was appointed Advisor of the finance to the Chairman of the Board of “Kazakhstan Institute for Industry Development” JSC. In June 2017, he occupied the post of the Director of the Administration and Finance Department and in May 2018, he became a Director of the “NADLoC” National Agency for the Development of Local Content” JSC.
